We oppose the AAP guidelines

Dear clients, family members, nutrition professional and eating disorders professional organizations:

In January 2023 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released their “Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Treatment of Children and Adolescents with Ob*sity” which includes guidelines that promote aggressive interventions for children as young as age 2, prescribing weight loss medications as young as age 12 and undergoing bariatric surgery as young as age 13.

As an eating disorder practice, Alo Nutrition strongly opposes the AAP guidelines. We align with the responses from the following organizations that have already spoken out, calling attention to the lack of consultation with eating disorder professionals when establishing these guidelines to the grade ‘C’ evidence that is the basis for some of these recommendations among other concerns. We encourage all nutrition professionals and organizations that claim to support clients with eating disorders to make your voice heard for the safety and well-being of children and families living in larger bodies.

To the children, adolescents and families impacted by these guidelines. We see you and we hear you! We are doing our part to push back against the systemic fat phobia, weight stigma and racism that exists within our medical system. Please know that we do not support these recommendations and you do not have to be a research experiment to know your value and worth!
